Ulster County Executive's Arts Awards 2023

Carol Zaloom, Posthumosly

SPECIAL CITATION

Carol Zaloom, who passed away in October 2022, grew up in Georgia, but lived for 50 years in an old Irish house in Saugerties where she raised her sons. She honed her skills as a linocut printmaker at the Woodstock School of Art, and exhibited in many galleries throughout New York State, with solo shows at The Chapel + Cultural Center at Rensselaer in Troy and Donskoj Gallery in Kingston. She was also deeply influenced by the Palaeolithic cave painters, the Japanese “Floating World” printmakers, and the pre-Raphaelite movement.

Carol’s work appeared in many national publications, including cover and interior illustrations for books published by Random House, Harper Collins, and David Godine, and many small publishers. She was awarded three Certificates of Design Excellence by Print magazine.

Carol was posthumously awarded a special citation by the Ulster County Executive’s Arts Awards.

“But it’s not just about the quality of her work, but her involvement in the community,” says Carol’s husband of two decades, the poet Mikhail Horowitz. “She was involved in so many things and with so many artists in the Hudson Valley. There was nothing she would not do to help, to encourage people to further their work. She did album covers for CDs; she did covers of books for local writers. She never turned anyone down. She always made her work affordable. She was generous with her work and her time. She didn’t have an ungenerous bone in her body.”
